The question of equality

The question of equality has been a recurrent problem throughout the ages.

I remember talking to a friend about the notion of equality. We were watching the news on the Internet when we came across another manifestations in the streets of Paris, as well as one in Montreal. My friend found it normal for people to protest in the streets, but I just found it irritating. My irritation confused my friend, so he asked me to give him an explanation. Because words could hardly come out of my mouth at first, he told me that it was useless to get irritated over something like that because people had the right to manifest since they are equal. I could not agree with those words.

Equality is something that mankind has been trying to reach over the years — and still do. However I do not think equality is possible.

Don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying that I am against equality; I came to the conclusion that equality is not possible in our society. We want equality but we are the ones to prevent ourselves from obtaining it. In my opinion, equality is simply a dream. Our society is based on a hierarchy — jobs and education are good examples.

Universities have different courses, and each course leads to a different job. People studying medicine are usually seen as more intelligent than those who study art. I am myself in a university focused on art and literature, and we are seen as lazy people who smoke weed and spend time sitting on the grass and talking instead of working — unfortunately the last bit is true.

When you get a job, you notice that equality is a mere word. You are not paid the same as your superior. You are not paid the same amount as someone who has been promoted last week. You do not treat your boss the same way you would treat a colleague (you don’t want to get fired, right?).

The same goes for society in general. You don’t treat a child like you would treat an adult. You don’t treat a stranger like you would treat your sibling. You do not treat a criminal like you would treat a respectable citizen.

As sad as it sounds, society is maintained by inequality. Being equal is affirming that we are all the same. Are we all the same? No. We do not have the same desires, the same wishes, the same thoughts, the same way of life, the same abilities, the same face, the same intelligence. We accept those differences; We accept to be unequal.  Those with a greater intelligence must be at the top to lead the others, to ensure the safety of their homeland. They prevent society from going out of control; they make the concrete changes in the world.

That’s why I’m irritated when I see people annoying the others in the streets. Instead of voicing their opinion, they should make all the necessary efforts to realize their goals and their wish. To me, manifestation is the easy and less exhausting way of changing things. That’s nothing to be proud about. My friend, after listening to me, understood my point of view and respected it, even though he did not want to agree with me.

He decided to stay positive while I decided to become realistic.

Escaping reality…

Reality… We all have our own different point of view concerning reality, but I think we can all agree about one thing: Reality is harsh! Sometimes, some people may not bear reality or they can be bored with it. And so as a result of this, they may want to escape reality. I will answer 4 questions concerning this thought of escaping reality throughout this article.

Who would try to escape reality?  The answer to this question is quite simple: Anyone. Anyone would try to escape reality and everyone has their own reasons: it can be someone who thinks that the world is harsh and horrible and so wants to imagine a better world, it can be someone who lost everything that was dear to them, it can be someone who has no luck in life, it can be someone who does not like their life, it can be someone with issues at school, and way more.

Why do they try to escape reality?  As I said before, everyone has their own reason to escape reality. But if I had to sum up the whole idea, I would say that people want to escape reality because they are not happy with it. Because we are all different, we all have different desires concerning the form reality should take. Because our vision of reality cannot be fulfilled, we decide to create the kind of “reality” we desire through our imaginary world.

When do they try to escape reality? People usually try to escape reality when they possess something that would allow them to do so, when they find a way to escape reality, even if it is only for a short period of time. They can also try to escape reality when their problems become unbearable, when they are bored, or even when they do not want to listen to someone. There are so many moments where people want to escape reality that I can’t write every single moment.

How do they try to escape reality? There are many ways to escape reality, just like the number of moments where they would try to escape reality. Some of the most common to get disconnected from reality and the real world would be to listen to music, to watch a lot of series, to watch anime, to read books or even simply to go on the Internet, to the point of not even caring anymore about reality. But those are what I would call the “soft ways”. Yes, there are “hard ways” that are used by some people to escape reality, and those ways are the sad ways of trying to escape reality. Two of the “hard ways”  I am talking about are alcohol and suicide. However, I will not talk about those two in details through this article because I am going to write specific articles about them later. But what I can say is that when life becomes too unbearable and when problems are overwhelming us, we usually tend to disregard the soft ways and immediately jump on the hard ways (alcohol is a way to forget our problems, that is to say to forget a reality that only brings problems, while suicide is a way used by some people to escape a harsh reality for good).

Whatever your way of escaping reality, you should never use one of the hard way to escape reality, because those ways are similar to the notion of “running away” from your problems. If you try to escape reality because of a problem, you should face it with courage! That is the true way to change reality.  Now if you’re not escaping reality because of a problem, then you should just be careful not to completely disregard reality.

Is it possible to bring world peace?

“If everyone wanted peace as much as they want a new iPhone, then there would be peace.”
― Shira Tamir

I came accross this quote when I was on the website goodreads and I must admit it made me laugh, because this quote is quite an interesting one.  This person combined several problems in order to suggest a solution to another problem: A way to get World Peace.

I will first explain quickly in my own way what that quote means. Today’s society is quite a materialistic one. On the one hand, we have those who produce in mass to sell as much as possible afterwards, and on the other hands, we have the consumers who buy what they want (not always for primary needs). I see quite often (and some of you must certainly see it as well) people who talk about buying the new Iphone, or a new smartphone, a new tablet or even a new computer, even though their old device is still working.  What’s more, they talk about buying a new one as if it was nothing, as if it was cheap. I do not know about the others, but when I see something like that, I always think: “If you have enough money to buy a new [enter the name of the device here] even though the one you currently have is still working, then you have enough money to do something better with it.”

Now, that “something better” refers to many things, but as an exemple to illustrate this expression,  I would take the case of the homeless in the streets.

What would be a natural reaction when a homeless asks you for money? I would say that the most natural thing people would do (even though it is quite a sad one) is to ignore the homeless asking for money, or to simply lie and say that they don’t have/carry any money. And notice that I used the word would instead of the word will. And there is a reason for that. That is because not everyone will have the same natural reaction to such a situation. As a matter of fact, some people would find it more natural to think that it is better to help a homeless instead of ignoring or lying to them. Now let’s come back to those who would rather ignore or lie to those homeless people. Among them, you will find people who won’t give even a single coin to them and yet will talk about buying a new device as if it was nothing, and yet still have their current device working. And that’s one of the situation where I would say “If you have enough money to buy a new device even though the one you currently have is still working, then you have enough money to help a homeless who only asks for a coin. It is not as if that person is asking you to give him a house to live in.”

In my opinion, the problem can usually be seen into two forms: Either people think that if they give money, the one receiving the money is going to make a bad use of it, or they think that while they are working hard to earn money (sometimes just enough to live a decent life), those homeless people try to get money while doing nothing. But I have my own little solution concerning this matter: If everyone would give a coin to every homeless they see, not only they would lose almost nothing, but the homeless would be able to get out of a terrible situation.

Now some of you would certainly say that if the homeless start to get a lot of money from people, more and more people will fake bein homeless just to get more money. I already anticipated this sort of situation, but I will keep it for another article, because this is not the subject of this article. (Remember that I was just giving an example here)

So is it possible to bring World Peace? My answer will be yes. And there is a simple reason behind my answer: I want to believe that World Peace is possible, and I want to believe in mankind and in their ability to create a better future. If we do not even believe in ourselves, how could we even start to hope for something such as World Peace anyway?

Then how can we bring World Peace? There are many ways to bring World Peace, and the interesting quote I found on Goodreads gives some ways of doing so in itself. Do not be too selfish, because selfishness is one of the main reasons why people keep a certain distance from each other. Love everyone as if they were members of your own family, because there can be no peace if there is no love. Help people in need, and become an example to follow for the others. Another important point (and difficult to obtain) to bring peace is to have mutual trust. When there is no trust, there is no peace. Did you notice that I used the world peace  instead of World Peace. That is because you cannot achieve World Peace by yourself, nor can I, nor can anyone. Everyone has to work together in order to bring peace, and by working together and bringing each little piece of peace, we will be able to create World Peace.
